Application Guidelines for the First Program

1. Program Overview

This program is a hands-on initiative designed to nurture the next generation of “KOGEI Art Producers (KogeiGene).” It aims to ensure that the rich value of Japanese traditional art and crafts is recognized and circulated internationally, bridging the academic world—museums and universities—with the art market, including dealers and fairs.

2. Number of Participants

Up to 10 participants will be selected for the first program, including those chosen through an open application process.

3. Eligibility

For curators, art dealers, directors, and others involved in the visual arts who have an interest in traditional crafts and fine art, and are motivated to engage in mutual learning and the promotion of cultural value. Must also meet the following criteria:

  • Art dealers must have at least three years of experience at a gallery, art dealership, or similar institution affiliated with either the All Japan Art Dealers Association or the Five-City Art Dealers Association, and must currently be active in such an organization.
  • Must have at least three years of practical experience or ongoing achievements in related fields such as art, culture, design, media, or business development.
  • Must be committed to applying the skills and knowledge gained from this program to their future activities and contributing to the cultural and economic development of Japan.
  • Must be able to participate in the monthly curriculum held in Tokyo.
  • Must be able to participate in an annual showcase.
  • Must possess a valid passport.

The following individuals are not eligible:
・Those in organized crime groups (as defined in Article 2, Paragraphs 3 and 4 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance on the Exclusion of Organized Crime Groups, Ordinance No. 54, 2011)
・Those who have members of organized crime groups among the representatives, officers, employees, or members of the organization or company to which they belong
・Those whose main activities are deemed to be for the purpose of supporting or opposing a specific political party or religious organization

4. Qualities and Competencies

  • ・Able to understand and respond in conversational English
  • ・Strong communication and networking skills

5. Program Content

  • Goal Setting: Each participant sets concrete objectives and conducts regular self-assessments.
  • Seminars: Attend 10 monthly seminars (6 in 2026, 4 in 2027).
  • Field Visits and Training: Conduct on-site research and training at museums and art fairs in Japan and abroad (e.g., TEFAF).
  • International Symposiums: Invite museum professionals from Japan and overseas to plan and execute symposiums.
  • Exhibitions: Host exhibitions in Kyoto and internationally to showcase program outcomes.
  • Final Report: Prepare and submit a report upon program completion.

6. What You'll Gain

  • Experience and Visibility: Gain hands-on experience as a “KOGEI Art Producer (KogeiGene)” at international art fairs, and showcase achievements through exhibitions and symposiums. Participants receive a certificate upon completion, providing direct benefits for career development.

7. Financial Support

  • Tuition: Free of charge.
  • Travel and Accommodation: Costs for domestic and international study trips and training will generally be covered. Participants may need to cover a portion if expenses exceed the set limits.
  • Practical Training Support: A fixed allowance will be provided to cover transportation and accommodation related to on-site training.

8. First Program Period

April 2026 – March 2028
After completing the program, participants are encouraged to remain actively involved in international exhibitions and initiatives promoting Japanese art, antiques, and crafts worldwide.

9. Application Procedure

Please submit the following documents via the designated application method:

  • Statement of Purpose (in Japanese and English), including educational background, professional experience, and language proficiency
  • Letter of Recommendation written by an individual who is well-acquainted with your professional field
  • Supplementary Materials (optional), such as portfolios or documentation of previous achievements

10. Selection Process

  • First Stage: Document screening by the Selection Committee.
  • Second Stage: Interview (in person or online).

Committee Review: The Selection Committee will evaluate eligible applications based on the applicant’s qualifications, experience, and motivation.

Reference Check: For shortlisted candidates, the committee may contact the listed referees or supervisors to confirm suitability for participation.

11. Application Deadline

Friday, December 19, 2025, 18:00 (JST)

12. Notification of Results

Successful applicants will be notified by the end of February 2026.

13. Certificate

Participants who complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion under the KOGEI Art Producer (KogeiGene) Development Program.
